Short answer: for home batteries, LFP (lithium iron phosphate) has become the go-to chemistry: it typically lasts about 4,000-6,000 cycles to 80% capacity versus about 2,500-4,000 for NMC (nickel manganese cobalt), and it’s far more resistant to overheating. NMC’s advantage, more energy per pound, matters for cars and phones but hardly for a battery bolted to a garage wall. Side by side
| LFP | NMC | |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle life (to 80% capacity, home use) | about 4,000-6,000 | about 2,500-4,000 |
| Thermal runaway onset | about 270°C | about 210°C |
| Energy density | about 140-170 Wh/kg | about 200-250 Wh/kg |
| Cobalt | None | Yes |
| Usable capacity | Often close to 100% of rated | Historically about 80-90% |
| Weight | Heavier per kWh | Lighter |

What the numbers mean in years
If a battery does one full cycle a day (for example, storing solar for the evening), 4,000 cycles is about 11 years and 6,000 cycles about 16 years. Many homes cycle less than that, especially if the battery is mainly for backup. Warranties, typically around 10 years, are usually the practical limit to plan around; see are home batteries worth it.
Safety
All lithium-ion batteries need proper installation, clearances and a battery management system. LFP’s higher thermal runaway temperature gives a bigger safety margin, which is one reason it now dominates stationary storage. Always use a certified product and a licensed installer, and follow local fire code placement rules.
Which popular batteries use which?
- LFP: Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P, FranklinWH aPower 2, among others.
- NMC: the older Tesla Powerwall 2.
Per Base Power’s list; check each spec sheet, since manufacturers change chemistries between generations.
Does chemistry matter for portable power stations and EVs?
- Portable power stations: LFP models are heavier but last many more cycles; good for frequent use. See portable power stations.
- EVs: both are common. LFP packs tolerate regular charging to 100% better, while NMC packs offer more range per pound. Follow your carmaker’s charging advice.
How to choose a home battery (beyond chemistry)
- Usable capacity (kWh) for how long it lasts. See how long a home battery lasts.
- Continuous and surge power (kW) for what it can run.
- Warranty: years, cycles or energy throughput, and guaranteed capacity at the end.
- Compatibility with your solar inverter and backup goals.
- Installed price per usable kWh.
FAQ
Do LFP batteries work in the cold? Charging is limited at freezing temperatures; most home units include heaters or should sit in a garage or other protected space.
Is a lead-acid battery cheaper? Upfront, sometimes, but it lasts far fewer cycles and needs more space and care.
